Hot Hair

This is a prequel (more, the first in the series, really) of the last story I posted. It's set sometime between when Sheppard activates the chair and when he and O'Neill leave.

Title: Hot Hair
Author: Zander
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Sheppard wants some answers.
Notes: Missing scene in the first half of Rising.

“Hey! Wait up.”

The scientist slowed to a halt and turned, an irritated expression on his face. His arms were full of folders and notebooks. The irritation became a full blown scowl as he took in the Major’s pilot jumpsuit.

“Yes? Is there something I can do for you….” He paused for a moment, squinting at the Major’s name patch. “Major Sheppard. What can I, the infamous Dr. McKay, do for you?”

“You’re the head science geek around these parts, aren’t you? What can you tell me about the Stargate..Atlantis..the Ancients. Any of it.”

McKay gave a dry chuckle and turned, heading back towards his original destination. Sheppard gave a disbelieving look and followed him.

“You haven’t answered my question, yet. Where are you going?”

“Excuse me, Major, I have work to do. If you want an answer out of me, you’ll just have to follow me. Now that we have actual approval to go and a concrete destination, my work has gone from the theoretical to the practical. I have about three times the workload and everything was due a week ago. You’ll just have to put up with me working while I talk. I may even call on you to help, god forbid. The first thing you can do,” he said, handing the Major a small stack of folders and picking up a laptop from a table they were passing, “is hold these.”

The trip was short and mostly consisted of Sheppard looking on in vague amusement as McKay barked orders at each of the small groups of scientists and various technical personnel they passed. A few looked annoyed, but all of them went to work quickly. Until they came to a particularly sour looking individual, his brown hair back in a ponytail and his glasses slightly askew.

“Why am I doing this?” he demanded. “It’s pointless. A waste of my time. Any random grunt could do it. He could do it,” he said, gesturing to Sheppard.

“No, he can’t,” McKay all but spat out. Before Sheppard could protest at being put at a level beneath ‘grunt’, McKay went on. “He’s with me. Helping me. If you don’t like it, you can go to Weir and request that you be put in charge of this rabble. However, until that happens, I’m still in charge. Which means you do whatever little task I tell you to do. Which, in this case, is running simulations to make sure that the interface that was created to use the ZedPM to charge Earth’s Stargate doesn’t overload the system and blow Cheyenne Mountain up. I don’t know about you, but if we manage to find a power source in this new galaxy, I’d like to have an Earth to return to. Now, are we clear? Are you going to continue with this little hissy fit, or can I move along?”

The man turned his glare to Sheppard, who replied with a raised eyebrow. His scowl deepened and he turned pointedly away, back to his computer. McKay shook his head and continued back in the direction he’d originally been heading.

“I take it you two have some problems?” Sheppard prodded.

“That would be an understatement, Major. Kavanagh thinks he’s right, most of the time, and that everyone else is a clueless moron.”

“From what it looks like, that’s what you think, too.” The response got a slight chuckle from McKay.

“But the difference is that I usually am right. Most of the time, Kavanagh’s just blowing hot hair.”

“Uhh, don’t you mean ‘air’?”

McKay turned towards Sheppard, a full blown grin on his face. “No, no. In Kavanagh’s case, it’s definitely ‘hair’. Now step it up, Major. You have ten-thousand years of history to catch up on.”

Cute, I like this. Now, is this taking place on earth, while there still at the SGC, or have they already gone through the gate?

Can't wait for the next part. Keep them coming.
