“What do you want, Major?” McKay asked. He hadn’t been out of the medical center more than a minute before Sheppard had latched onto him.

“I want to know what that thing you’re fiddling with is,” Sheppard said.

McKay sighed. “I’m not sure, exactly, but I think it’s a personal shield that the Ancients were developing. I was bringing it to my lab to run a few tests.”

“So just give it to me,” Sheppard said, reaching out a hand. “I’ll put it on and see if it works.”

McKay clutched the object closer. “No thank you, Major. If and when I decide to use it, I’ll test it on myself.”

Sheppard laughed. “Funny, McKay. Last I checked, it’s a good bet you need the Ancient gene, just like most everything else in this damned city. So let me see it,” he said, trying to grab the device from McKay’s hands. McKay clutched the device to his chest and gave Sheppard a defiant glare.

“Look, Major Sheppard. I know you like to think you’re so special because you’re different from most of the people around here, but you don’t know everything.”

“No,” Sheppard said, an amused look on his face. “That would be your job apparently.”

“Now,” McKay said, ignoring Sheppard’s comment, “I was in Dr. Beckett’s lab before you decided that I was today’s entertainment. He gave me some kind of gene therapy treatment. Supposedly, I know have the ability to activate and use Ancient technology just like you do. So, if, and I repeat, if I decide to use this device, I’ll be using myself as the guinea pig. I won’t be needing your so-called ‘expertise’ this time.”

“Well, doc, that was all you had to say.” His face had gone serious and McKay gave him a wary look.

Slowly, McKay put his hands down. After a moment, he shook his head and turned to head down the nearby stairs. He stopped when he heard Sheppard’s voice.

“Uh…McKay….”

McKay started to turn a glare in Sheppard’s direction. The glare turned to a look of panic as he caught his foot and felt his balance slip. He had one moment to see Sheppard, who had a look of panic that must of rivaled his own, reaching out a frantic hand, before he was crashing and bouncing down the stairs.

“McKay! McKay, you all right?” Sheppard asked, dropping down next to him. McKay briefly checked himself over for injuries before giving Sheppard a short nod and standing up.

“I’m…fine,” McKay said, wonder in his voice. “Perfectly fine. You think I’d be in pain, but…nothing. Not even bruises, let alone the broken bones I was worrying about.”

Sheppard gave him an odd look before pointing to his chest. “Maybe it has to do with that thing.”

“What thing?” McKay asked, looking down. His mouth fell open as he realized that the personal shield had attached itself to his chest. He grinned. “Go figure. I guess it works.”

Sheppard returned the grin and stood up. “So, what’s next? I mean, you’ve fallen down the stairs and survived without a scratch, so the first experiment is a success. What’s next on the list.”

“Well….” McKay drawled. “I hadn’t exactly planned that far ahead. I wasn’t even going to use it right away. I suppose I’ll return to my original plan and head to the lab and run some tests.”

“You don’t want to see what it can do?”

“Well, of course, but….”

“And you already know it works, right?”

“Yes, but….”

“Then we test it.”

The wary look returned to McKay’s face and he felt himself take a step backward. “How, exactly, do you suggest we test it, Major?”

“Easy. I’ll shoot you.”

The step McKay had taken multiplied, and he found himself quickly backing away from Sheppard.

”You’re crazy. You can’t shoot me. Getting shot wasn’t first on my list for tests for this thing,” he said, gesturing to the device on his chest. “And it certainly wasn’t anywhere in my top ten list of things to do today.”

“It won’t be the first test. You’ve already tested it, so you know it works. Now you’re just…confirming what you already know to be true. Testing the hypothesis.”

“Well….”

“That’s a yes, then. Let’s go,” Sheppard said. He grinned and headed away, in the direction of his room. McKay followed, a small smile on his face. Not what he had in mind, but it would do.

Note to Amy: Let me know how you like and which version’s better…. I think it’s this one, because it felt a little more fluid, but let me know, ‘cause you said you liked the original.
